Simple Syrup

Simple syrup is a staple of the kitchen used for desserts and mixed drinks. Older bartenders references refer to it as gomme syrup or bar syrup.

Ready

  • 1 part water
  • 2 parts sugar

Set

  • pan
  • measuring cup
  • funnel
  • container and/or bottle

Go

  1. Pour water into pan place on heat.
  2. Bring the water to a boil.
  3. Pour the sugar into the boiling water.
  4. Cook until sugar is dissolved completely, remove the pan from the heat.
  5. Allow to cool completely and bottle.

What you should know

Be creative! Add flavor by means of extracts (add to cooled syrup), fruit juices (add to cooled syrup), or teas in place of water for boiling.

Re: Simple Syrup

I often will have two or three simple syrups in my fridge. They will last for months and are great for mixing cocktails and making deserts.

My favorite is lemon: add the zest of 1 lemon to the water before boiling.
